FAYETTEVILLE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
When Joseph Smith and his wife Lillie took their son on his first outing to the Kohl's in Fayetteville, everything went smoothly until Joseph dropped his wife's wallet.
"As I folded up the stroller, the wallet falls out of the top part of it," Joseph Smith said. "Of course I didn't see it, it was pouring down rain, and I was hustling to get everything in the car."
The next day, Joseph Smith realized the wallet was missing. He went back to Kohl's and got the surveillance video from Jan. 1.
"(The woman in the video) kind of stops, looks down, picks up the wallet, then walks into the next set of doors standing in front of the entrance," Joseph Smith said. "She opens up the wallet and starts handing out what's in it to her kids. There was about $100 cash and 200 to 300 dollars in gift cards."
Joseph Smith said he is upset not only that his wife's wallet was not returned, but the example the woman in the surveillance video sets for the children she is with.
"What really gets me is I can see an adult doing it, it's just kind of the world we live in, but when you have your two kids with you," Joseph Smith said. "To set that kind of example, to say here not only is ok to pick it up but let's go through it, let's take what's in it, and then not even turn it in."
Lillie is a stay-at-home mom, Joseph is in seminary school and to them $100 having a newborn baby boy is a big financial hit.
"We could cancel our bank card, but it's a lot of cash," Lillie Smith said. "It was frustrating that on the camera she handed it to the kids like that, and we thought maybe she is actually going to turn it in, and we got excited and she didn't."
On Wednesday, the Smiths said that they received an update from the Fayetteville Police Department. They were told that the people who found the wallet turned it in to the Pike County Sheriff's Office, and it contained all of it's contents. A detective from the Fayetteville Police Department said someone will pick it up for the couple on Monday.
