Blind dad leaves doctors stunned by regaining his sight

Paul Hill was told nothing more could be done for his vision - and then, incredibly, it started to come back

A father left blind by a degenerative eye disease has astonished doctors by regaining his sight.

Paul Hill, 46 – who suffers from double detached retinas and Myopic Macular Degeneration – started to lose the sight in his left eye over 10 years ago.

He visited hospital for regular scans and had drugs injected into his eyes in an attempt to slow the degeneration. But in April last year, he lost his central vision.

Mr Hill said: “The consultant said it was game over. There was nothing else they could do and I would have to register as legally blind. That was quite a shock.

“I had no central vision, just peripheral – but that was all soft focus.”

The dad-of-two from Halifax, West Yorks, who worked in digital marketing, refused to give up his job, instead getting lifts from friends and increasing the text size on his computer screen. He eventually taught himself to cycle carefully to work every day.

Then in September he was dealt another crushing blow when he was made redundant. But a month later he noticed his vision altering.

Mr Hill said: “My sight started to change for the better and then it came back. The consultant was floored. He didn’t really speak at first – he couldn’t explain it. The nurse said it was a miracle.”

One theory is that scarring to his macula, part of the retina, has moved or shrunk.

Mr Hill said: “I’m assuming my age helped as the condition usually affects older people.”

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust’s medical director David Wise said: “This is great news. We are delighted for Mr Hill and his family.”

Mr Hill, who has set up his own video production company, added: “After a terribly tough year, I can literally see light at the end of the tunnel.”
