Silent CD released by Sussex church proves a hit as recording sells out
Squeaking pews, a few dull footsteps and the hum of distant traffic – it hardly seems a must-have soundtrack for your iPod.
But the sound of silence has proved a real money-spinner for one church – its alternative chill out CD is a sell-out hit.
The 30-minute recording seems to be the perfect tonic to escape the hustle and bustle of modern day life, says the man who created it.
People use it to relax to and meditate with, according to Roger Bing.
‘In this day and age, everybody seems to live busier, noisier lives,’ he said.
‘But sometimes people like to sit down and have a bit of peace and quiet.’
Church-goer Mr Bing, 74, of Seaford, east Sussex, added: ‘There are a few noises here and there – if it was total silence people might get bored.
‘Those who have bought it have enjoyed it.’
The CD, created to fund repairs at the 12th century St Peter’s Church, in the seaside town, has proved so popular, the church has even taken orders from Germany, Austria and Ghana.
Dr Andrew Mayes, the Rev Canon of St Peter’s Church, added: ‘We thought the idea of the peaceful silence you get inside the church could be something a bit different. I’m delighted it’s proved so popular. Our church is an 800-year-old sacred space with a wonderful quality of silence.’
