The Windsor Hum continues to mystify, but Ottawa is promising to redouble efforts to get to the bottom of the strange sound bedeviling residents of the southern Ontario city.
Bob Dechert, Canada’s parliamentary secretary to Foreign Minister John Baird, visited Windsor nine months ago on a fact-finding mission to probe the noise—a low, hum-like drone that Windsor residents have complained about for some two years. See the WSJ’s take on the mystery here.
At the time of his visit, Mr. Dechert was armed with a study conducted by Canada’s natural-resources department, which concluded the hum originated in the vicinity of Zug Island, a nearly 600-acre, man-made island on the Michigan side of the Detroit River. But U.S. officials weren’t convinced the noise was emerging from their side of the Detroit River.
At an event in Windsor on Monday, Mr. Dechert said the government is making cash–about 60,000 Canadian dollars ($60,496)–available for two scientists from the University of Windsor and London, Ontario’s Western University to investigate further. The two have until mid-October to report their findings.
The scientists will attempt to track the direction of the hum’s travel, and measure its vibration and frequency.
“Our government takes this issue seriously and is following up on our commitment to find a solution that works for the people of Windsor,” Mr. Dechert said in a statement, which did not provide details on the cost of the study or when it is scheduled to be finished.
