Shoppers were left seriously injured after a 33-tonne shark tank suddenly exploded in the middle of a busy shopping centre.
Flying shards of glass and a torrent of water left 15 people injured at the bustling Orient shopping mall in Shanghai, China.
CCTV footage shows members of the public ducking for cover after the tank, which housed sharks, turtles and fish, shattered without warning.
‘There were lots of injuries caused by flying glass, some of them serious because the glass was so thick,’ said a police spokesman. ‘We are investigating what caused this.’
Customers, shop assistants and security staff were injured when the tank burst, with many being taken to hospital suffering from deep cuts after being showered by broken glass.
‘I was just walking by and heard the explosion of this water tank. I heard a bang, then water flushed out,’ explained one shocked passer-by.
‘It was horrible, like a bomb explosion,’ said another. ‘Some pedestrians were pushed two metres away by the force of the water.’
Investigations into the incident are still ongoing, however it has been suggested the sudden drop in temperature across the city may have been to blame.
